Florida International University Football Player MIA After Fight With Girlfriend

By

Florida International University football player Jonnu Smith was found with severe burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm on Halloween. This comes after he and his pregnant girlfriend had an argument.

Miami Herald reported that Mary Gaspar, Smith's girlfriend who is five months pregnant with their child, has been charged with aggravated battery. Apparently, she doused the FIU senior tight end with boiling water.

Gaspar has pleaded not guilty. She has also been released on a pretrial release order.

The arrest affidavit revealed that the two argued on that day over the attention that Jonnu Smith was paying to Gaspar and their relationship. In Smith's dorm room, as she felt "extremely emotional and stressed," she boiled a pot of water, walked towards her boyfriend and poured it on him.

Moreover, when she did not receive the strong reaction that she was aiming for, Gaspar admitted to the police that she also hit him with her open hands. It is unknown how grave Smith's burns are. However, he has been seen back on campus but he is not fit to play football yet.

According to USA Today, the FIU senior tight end will be missing the remainder of the 2016 season. It was announced on Thursday.

Smith is described as one of the Panthers' best players. He has 1,936 career receiving yards and 17 career touchdowns. This season, he had 441 yards off 39 catches. Florida International (3-7) will miss playing in a bowl game, the publication noted.

It was also speculated that Smith's college career may be over. Nonetheless, he is expected to be able to play professionally. Several NFL draft projections have deemed him as being selected or getting picked up as an undrafted free agent.

As early as freshman year, Smith has already shined amid FIU's 2013 offense. He led the team with 39 receptions for 399 yards then.
