Math Students Get Help From Former NASA Expert

By

Math students at Ankeny are getting the help they need. If you are a student that needs that extra push and help in math, Ankeny's tutoring service called Mathnasium is there to help.

According to the owner, Tommy Ericson, "We are a math only supplemental education facility. We focus on just math and we teach for understanding." With Mathnasium, students can get the assistance needed at any skill level.

Mathnasium is available for students between grades 1 through 12, cites Des Moines. But they also include a program for prekindergarten and calculus. Students just need to become a member and get a sit-down tutorial for about 2 to 3 times a week.

"We also present our material in a way that makes sense, using a mental-verbal-visual-written tactile. We cover the gamut, so we hit all learning styles," says Ericson.

Ericson himself is an academic. He has worked with NASA as a subcontractor in the aerospace industry. After 8 years, he moved to Iowa to start a family. Now, he turned his attention into opening a business. He explains that he loves to work with kids and he wants to help them. He states that he was an actuarial scientist before. Now, he wants to teach kids.

His business is a one-on-one approach in teaching Math. The instructors back off to give students space to work on a problem. They relieve the classroom pressure. They also assist on homework and helps the students gain confidence in the subject.

Currently, his clientele comes from students from Polk City, Bondurant and Altoona. Ericson also established a Mathnasium in West Des Moines, and one branch opening soon in Grimes.

If you're interested to join Mathnasium, you can visit Ericson and his staff at 1620 N. Ankeny Boulevard, Suite 104, Ankeny. They are open between 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Mondays through Thursdays and 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Saturdays.
