The upcoming women's soccer matchup between Canada and Germany is familiar, but the stakes are so much higher this time around.

Canada and Germany's women's soccer team are all geared to meet in the Olympic semifinals, the two teams' second clash in a week after team captain Christine Sinclair and her squad pulled a 2-1 upset in the final game of group-stage play on August 9.

The victory of Canada during their matchup on August 9 was the Canadian's first against Germany in 13 all-time meetings, in which it gave Canada the top spot in Group F, according to MLS Soccer.

But, during their previous games against other Olympic teams, the goal of the Canadian soccer midfielder Sophie Schmidt and a stoic defensive effort, helped Canada prevail over France, while Germany defeat China by a 1-0 in their quarterfinal.

However, as neither team has experienced the Olympic finals before, Canada and Germany have a distinguished history in the game of soccer. Germany has won three bronze medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008. While the bronze medal of Canada at London 2012 representing the country's best-ever finish at an Olympics or senior World Cup.

The match between Canada and Germany will feature the top two scorers of the Rio Olympics 2016 women's soccer. Germany's Melanie Behringer leading the pack with four goals, while Janine Beckie is Canada's top goal getter in her first Olympic Games.

Technically, both teams will get to compete for a medal in the 2016 Olympics, but only one will get a shot for the gold.

On the other hand, the U.S. women's soccer team had their temperaments tested by Sweden in the Olympic quarterfinals - where the United States team lost. And after giving up the winning penalty kick to Sweden, the American soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo called her opponents a bunch of cowards, National Post reported.
