'Mock Mass Shooting' Planned at UT - Austin Moved Off Campus

By

Pro-gun activists that planned a "mock mass shooting" at the University of Texas (UT) - Austin will move their demonstration from the campus grounds.

UT - Austin released a statement Wednesday emphasizing that the administration is not singling out the gun advocates, but was iterating that their planned demonstration could be considered criminal trespassing.

"Many groups seek to use the university's facilities each year and they are all treated equally and are turned away. For example, we have not allowed the Westboro Baptist Church to protest on campus and have not allowed labor groups to protest on campus. We have told outside sporting groups that they may not use our sporting facilities," read UT - Austin's statement. "When outside individuals come on campus and violate our rules regarding use of our grounds and facilities, they are asked to leave. If they do not, it becomes a criminal trespass matter. We suggest that any outside organizations planning such events on campus relocate them to other space where they would be allowed."

Murdoch Pizgatti, a founder of Come and Take It Texas and DontComply.com, told The Austin American-Statesman the "mock mass shooting" demonstration is no longer scheduled to take place on the UT - Austin campus, but rather a nearby public area. The newspaper noted the most likely location would be on Guadalupe Street.

"We will move forward with the event on the adjacent public land using UT as the backdrop," Pizgatti said.

According to The Houston Chronicle, the demonstration's organizers want to demonstrate how the concealed carry of a weapon can end a mass shooting and limit the damage done by the shooter(s). The demonstration is also meant to illustrate how terrorists do not abide by "gun-free zone" rules. Demonstrators will use fake guns and victims will be represented with cardboard cutouts.

Jason Orsek, one of the organizers, plans to meet with UT's Dean of Students, Soncia Reagans-Lilly, to discuss the school's policies on Thursday. Orsek indicated the demonstrators would not try to use UT - Austin's campus in spite of the school's warning.
