University of Maryland Unveils 'Star Spangled Banner' Inspired Terrapin Football 'Triumph' Uniforms (PHOTOS)

The University of Maryland (UM) is commemorating the 200th anniversary of "The Star Spangled Banner" with some ultra-patriotic football uniforms.

According to ESPN, Under Armour has designed custom-made uniforms for the Maryland Terrapins to wear when they play the West Virginia Mountaineers Saturday. The uniforms are inspired by the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry.

The battle lasted from Sept. 12 to Sept. 15, 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem called "Defence of Fort McHenry," which eventually became the lyrics for "The Star Spangled Banner." Some of Key's original handwritten words will appear on the Terrapins' helmets and jersey sleeves.

"We are excited to continue our outstanding partnership with Under Armour as we usher in a new era of Maryland athletics in the Big Ten Conference," Kevin Anderson, athletic director at UM, said in a press release. "Kevin Plank and his entire team have been strong supporters of our athletic programs and our student-athletes who proudly don the Under Armour brand. This decade-long agreement showcases Under Armour's unwavering commitment to the University of Maryland and our fans."

The Terrapins are known for wearing unique, inventive football uniforms.

On the helmet, the outline of Fort McHenry will replace the Maryland turtle logo, though they do bear a certain resemblance. Team captains will wear red belts, just like the U.S. Military captains did in the Battle of Baltimore, whereas the rest of the team will wear blue belts.

A final touch for the uniforms will be the word "Triumph" on the back of each Maryland jersey instead of player names. UM received a one-time go-ahead from the NCAA to use a slogan on the backs of jerseys, something reserved for military schools.

"The University of Maryland is an integral part of Under Armour's history, culture and identity," Matt Mirchin, executive vice president of global marketing for Under Armour, said in the release. "We look forward to continuing this remarkable partnership over the next decade and beyond, outfitting the Terrapin student-athletes and fans in the most innovative performance gear in the market."
