The Canadian women's rugby sevens team won the bronze medal on Monday, August 8 at the Rio Olympics beating Great Britain 33-10.

Canada dominated throughout the match with Karen Paquin scoring the opening try. Ghislaine Landry had a couple of tries, while Kelly Russell and Bianca Farella had one try each.

Landry seemed to have recouped her kicking form in the match as she converted four of five kicks to wrap up with an impressive 18 of Canada's 33 points.

Although Britain was able to cut Canada's lead to 26-10 thanks to Jasmine Joyce's second-half try, Landry had other plans as she sealed the victory with a try and conversion putting Canada back ahead 33-10, CBC Olympics reported.

Later, front-runners Australia women's rugby sevens team beat rival New Zealand 24-17 in Deodoro, Rio de Janeiro winning the first gold medal in Olympic women's rugby. The gold medal comes just 10 weeks after Australia won their maiden World Series tournament. Australia kicked off their Olympic expedition in electrifying fashion crushing Colombia 53-0 in their opening pool match, prior to defeating Fiji 36-0 comfortably in their second match.

Their third and final pool match against U.S. wasn't really a much-needed loss; however their 12-all draw surely served as the fright they needed.

Just before Chloe Dalton leveled the score up with her dependable right foot, prolific tryscorer Emma Tonegato leaped in to score on the full time whistle. The team eventually returned to their dominating ways in the quarter final moving into the semi-finals after beating Spain 24-0, Fox Sports reported.

The Aussies made it to the final after defeating Canada 17-5.

With the bronze victory, the Canadian team on the other hand had an opportunity to avenge a 22-0 loss to Britain in their final preliminary round game. Plus, they earned a favorable finish to the tournament after dropping a 17-5 semi final decision to Australia on Monday, August 8.
