College depression is a widespread problem. Whether it's caused by being away from home for the first time or trying to fit into a new environment, it's a very real problem that needs to be dealt with. Sadly, depression is a common occurrence in today's college-age students. While college can be an exciting time in your life, it can also be overwhelming and a bit confusing.

It's perfectly normal for your college life to have ups and downs, and for you to feel sad at times. In this article, you'll find a few tips for dealing with depression as a college student to help you get back on solid ground. However, if your depression continues, please talk to a professional or a responsible adult in your life so that you can get the help you need.

Get Out and Get Active

From team sports to taking walks with your friends after dinner in the common areas, it's said that getting out and getting active can help with depression. If you're depressed, the last thing you need to do is stay cooped up in your dorm room, not talking to anyone. Instead, join a team, join a club, or find some friends to get out and get active with. You'll be glad that you did when you start feeling better.

Ask for Help

There are counselors, teachers, and doctors at the colleges for a reason. Whether you're wondering "what's TMS treatment?" and which of the available types of treatment is best for you, or just need someone to talk to, the adults are there to help. Depression is treatable. However, if you ignore it, it can become almost impossible to deal with.

Plan out Your Day

There's a lot to be said for staying organized when you're in college. Not only does it help you get the grades you need to graduate and be successful in your life, but it can also help with mild depression as well. A plan for each day will help you get out and about, which is great for dealing with depression.

Have a Good Support System

A good support system is essential when you're in college, to begin with. It's even more important if you're suffering from any type of depression. Support systems can be professional, teachers, counselors, your priest, or even a group of friends that know and understand what you're going through. It's also a good idea to join support groups to interact with students who are going through depression just as you are, as you can help one another to cope and get used to college life.

Keep to a Sleep Schedule

Depression, even mild depression, can be made worse by a poor sleep schedule. While it may be tempting to stay up half the night studying or hanging out with your friends, if you're depressed you need a sleep schedule that you stick to, no matter what. Setting a sleep schedule helps you get a head start on the day and be productive during the day because you've gotten the sleep needed to function with a clear head.

Stay Away from Drugs and Alcohol

Making sure to stay away from any type of drugs and alcohol is one of the best ways to treat even mild depression. You don't need these things to be happy and productive, so stay away from them at all costs.

These are just a few tips for helping you cope with depression as a college student. If you're more than mildly depressed, you'll want to get help somewhere from a trusted adult.
