Pacific University Considers Banning Smoking on All Of Its Campuses

By

Pacific University is considering banning smoking on all of its campuses starting May 2015.

The University Council, which includes staff and faculty, passed a proposed policy on March 13 that would ban smoking on the school's campus. It is waiting to be reviewed by the President's Cabinet, Pacific University Director of Media Relations Joe Lang told The Oregonian.

The President's Cabinet includes University President Lesley Hallick, the four vice-presidents and chief of staff at the university.

"It's still not necessarily final yet," Lang said. "The cabinet has to examine it and will probably do so this week."

The goal of the proposed legislation is to "create an environment that is consistent with Pacific University's commitment to improve the health and wellness of its community."

If passed, smoking would be banned on all Pacific University grounds, including outdoor areas, vehicles, parking lots and inside and personal vehicles

The smoking ban includes, but isn't limited to, use of pipes, hookahs, cigarettes and "nicotine delivery devices such as e-cigarettes," according to the policy.  The sale or distribution of tobacco products of any kind would also not be permitted on campus.

If the policy is approved, the University would also have to have announcements and signs conspicuously posted on campus property so that "the prohibitions and expectations of the policy are clear to students, employees and visitors.

Lang said the University has been considering this smoking ban policy for months.
