Marshville Men Charged In Off-Campus Shooting Incident

By

Daniel Steven Sheerer and Tony Antwone Knotts have each been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery for fatally shooting two people and injuring one on East Wilson Street near Wingate University, Wednesday night.

Currently, Sheerer and Knotts are being held in the Union County Jail without bond.

On Thursday afternoon, authorities identified the deceased as 19-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia and 18-year-old Yader Alberto Sandoval Garcia. Meanwhile, the surviving victim, 18-year-old Eleonel Castrejon Garcia, is recuperating well at CMC Main. The men were cousins.

The shooting prompted a campus lockdown as a mere precaution shortly after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. An alert was immediately sent to the campus community.

"Please remain calm. Move to the nearest building and close and lock all doors and windows. Close all blinds and turn off the lights."

Becca Seabock, a junior, said that when she received the message in class, she immediately packed her bag and ran into a dark room and waited for the situation to stabilize. She was along with few other students.

"Yeah, we were scared," she said.  "We didn't know what was going on. The doors didn't lock. I was just looking on twitter the whole time, people said they were hearing shots, sirens and ambulances,"

The lockdown was removed after about two hours.

This is the second lockdown at Wingate in several weeks. The university first initiated a lockdown after a student reported seeing a man pull out a gun on campus.
