Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan recently held the PlayStation awards 2016.

Considered by some in the industry as somewhat of an odd awards show where Sony rewards PlayStation format games based on commercial success or sales. Another odd thing about the PlayStation Awards ceremony is that it recognizes combined domestic and Asian region sales that sold one million units or more that is calls "Platinum Prize," according to PushSquare.

The PlayStation Awards give out awards on the basis of combined sales both shipped and downloaded, fan votes, and of course PlayStation Store sales numbers, PlayStationLifeStyle detailed. The list below are the categories for the said PlayStation Awards 2016.

  •  Platinum Prize - Sales of over one million units both shipped and downloaded
  •  Gold Prize - Sales of over 500,000 units both shipped and downloaded
  •  PlayStation Network Awards - Are given to three titles that had the best sales that passed through the PlayStation Network from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016
  •  User's Choice Award - Awarded to five titles that garnered the highest number of votes from Japanese users and another five titles that got the highest number of votes from users in the Asian region.

This year, two new categories were added to the list of categories.

  •  PlayStation VR Special Award - Which is awarded to five titles that did their share in assisting and contributed to the launch of the PlayStation VR in both Asia and Japan as of October 13, 2016.
  •  Indie Special Award - An award given to five indie titles which joined the PlayStation title lineups covering the date Oct. 1, 2015 to Sept. 30, 2016.

Interestingly, there were no Platinum awards given out this year. Accordingly, 2015 had Metal Gear Solid V, Minecraft, and Dragon Quest Heroes took home Platinum Prizes. Aside from trophies, this year's Gold and Network awardees were given supplementary prizes of 500,000 yen each.
