How Social Media Can Help Students With Their College Search

By

Social media has changed the way we do research. Nowadays, if we want to check someone out, all we need to do is search for their online profiles.

It can also be the same for those who are still undecided on where they should go for college or university. It's easier to do research on higher education institutions through social media.

According to U.S. News, aside from helping students find the right school for them, social media can also allow them to connect with alumni groups as well as interact with an institution's admissions staff. The publication also shared three more ways to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, among others, in searching for a college.

Look for other resources

While universities and colleges have their official social media accounts, it may not contain all the information that you need on the school. Moreover, don't just look at their Facebook profiles. You can check if they are more active on Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat as well.

Several academic and departments of universities and colleges have their own social media accounts, too. If you plan on a certain major for a specific school, it would be good to check their social media accounts and see whether they can provide you with what you are looking for.

Follow the college's network

This would entail following more than just the current students in a school. You can also check out the social media accounts of professors who teach interesting classes and who are famous for their research.

These professors involved in active research programs are often active in social media as well. It may be a red flag if programs in the school don't bother to cultivate their social media presence since it may indicate that there is not much enthusiasm at that particular college or university.

Check out less common platforms

LinkedIn is a valuable tool for following a college's network since it shows current students as well as the school's alumni. YouTube and Reddit are also great ways to look for content by the institution.
