By

Last month Times Higher Education (THE) released its World University Rankings (WUR) for 2016-2017 with the prestigious Oxford University winning the top spot over CalTech. We also know that the top majors that gets paid the most are those related to engineering and technology. Some of you might now be wondering which are the best schools to study these fields.

Here are the best universities for technology and engineering according to Forbes:

1. California Institute of Technology (CalTech), California, USA

CalTech may have lost its hold on the coveted number 1 spot at the WURs this year but we're pretty certain contenders had a hard time knocking CalTech off from the top of the list it had ruled for 5 years.

2. Stanford University, California, USA

Stanford University has produced many Silicon Valley success stories, including the likes of Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin, celebrates its landmark 125th year this October and it sure has great reason to celebrate making it in top of the charts and getting several grants including one from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

3. University of Oxford, UK

One of the oldest universities in the world, Oxford continues to shine as a model institution for higher education when it became the first non-American University to rank 1 at this year's WUR.

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA

Apart from its consistent performance in the rankings, MIT recently signed an agreement with Automobili Lamborghini to "work together on mutually interesting, cutting-edge research projects, focusing primarily on new materials in the automotive field, with exchange, collaboration projects and workshops leading to joint research in the chosen fields."

5. University of Cambridge, UK

While the University of Cambridge is one of the top schools for technology and engineering, it slips to number 4 in the 2016-2017 WUR list. The previous year, it slipped from 2nd to 3rd.

6. Princeton University, USA

Princeton Continues to perform strong despite a decrease in the university's endowment this year, it gained a 0.8 return.

Tied together in the 7th spot are:

7. Imperial College in London, UK;

To promote innovations in research and teaching, the Imperial College announced the £1 million Excellence Funds early this year. Vice Provost for Research, Prof. Nick Jennings will oversee the Excellence Fund for Frontier Research that aims to "support individuals or research groups who are moving into new or underdeveloped research areas, or examining a well-established research question from a fundamentally new and disruptive angle." Jennings said.

7. National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore

Ranking at number 24, NUS is the flagship university of Singapore and the premier higher education institution in Asia. The university focuses extensively on research and has its core strengths in engineering, life sciences and biomedicine, social sciences and natural sciences.

8. Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Switzerland

The Institute is considered as one of the best schools for studying computer science. Researchers from the ETH together with Swiss Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics will organize a "cybathlon" to showcase their technologies.

9. University of California Berkeley, USA

UC Berkeley ranks 10th THE's list tied with the University of Chicago. Like Stanford, it is also a recipient of a grant from the Chan Zuckerberg initiative to build a Biohub to study diseases in the Bay Area. Recently, Berkeley scientists are recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for their contribution in advancing research in bioengineering, molecular and cell biology and plant biology.

10. école Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland

EPFL researchers are currently working on "novel soft robots that can have unique properties for various clinical applications." According to MedGadget. They are working on robotics that are capable of mimicking the human body's natural movements.

11. Peking University, China

From 42nd last year, Peking University climbs up the WUR list at number 29. The University recently forged an agreement with UC Berkeley to work on innovations in public health and environmental sciences with Berkeley's School of Public Health and PKU's College of Environmental Science respectively.
