University of Alabama Basketball Player Devonta Pollard Arrested in Kidnapping Case

By

University of Alabama forward Devonta Pollard was charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping Tuesday in a case involving his mother and others, reported WTOK.

Pollard, who plays on the Crimson Tide basketball team, was arrested along with Joyce Johnigan in a kidnapping case involving an elementary school girl, Jashayla Hopson, in Mississippi. Johnigan and Pollard were arrested in Kemper County, Miss. on Tuesday.

Sheriff James Moore, of Kemper County, said Pollard and Johnigan will face one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping in a scheme that now totals six arrested conspirators.

Shaquayla Johnigan was arrested in Hattiesburg, Miss. on the same charge.

According to an affidavit, Wanda Faye Dancy, a 51-year-old employee of East Kemper Elementary School in Scooba, Miss., told Jesse Mae Pollard, 54, Devonta's mother, the girl's location in school and what she was wearing that day.

Shamarius Ruffin, 25, allegedly was told to get the girl from the library and deliver her to Dancy.

The affidavit states that Dancy told investigators Jesse Mae planned on using the girls as leverage to get back some of her land, the Associated Press reported.

According to a report by the Tuscaloosa News, police were able to trace Jesse Mae's cell phone use to Hopson's mother, with whom Pollard was having the land dispute.

Hopson was reportedly taken from her school around noon on April 30 and was found unharmed the next day on a rural road in Enterprise, Miss. She was left on the road and then walked to a nearby house and knocked on the door for help.

Jesse Mae Pollard was accused of kidnapping Hopson on April 30 and was arrested soon after. She was seen on surveillance tape buying the cell phone used to deliver a text message and a hang-up call to Hopson's mother. Pollard and the girl were seen leaving in a gold or tan Cadillac, a vehicle belonging to Devonta Pollard.

Investigators found the phone in the car along with a receipt and key to a hotel where the young girl was held with Jesse Mae and another, unidentified, woman.

The minimum prison sentence for kidnapping is 20 years with a maximum of life.

Moore said he expects to make at least one more arrest in the case.
