Learning: Fortified heart, Enlightened Mind

By

The emotion needs to be strengthened for optimum learning. Paul Tough wrote a book about the connection of heart and mind.

Schools are putting too much effort in developing the student's academics, leaving their emotional foundation behind, New York Times reported. David Brooks even stressed Paul Tough, the author of "Helping Children Succeed" and "How Children Succeed" for he stated that no one is better regarding this matter but him.

Education is one of those circles where the heart is inseparable from the head, according to David Brooks. He emphasized that in order for a student to achieve his goals and fulfill his dreams, one should live in a home where the students feel secure and loved in order for them to be free from anxiety and fear. Students should also form strong bond with his teachers and should be showered with love so that they will have a sense of certainty about their own value and some feeling of organization about their own particular future. He strongly believes that the key fact to succeed is the strong bond between the student and the teacher.

In Paul Tough's book, it mainly talks about how the students can improve their non-cognitive skills, meaning- the student's emotional maturity, empathy and interpersonal skills. David Brooks even said that parents are also a major factor in stabilizing their child's emotions. They should comfort their child whenever they are upset or sad.

The author also stated that; teacher shouldn't only teach biology but also to create a culture of caring criticisms in order for the students to feel that they are being loved and for them to feel the sense of belongingness and a teacher should teach their students not to be eaten by failure but to embrace them and consider it as a learning.
