Florida State Football: De'Andre Johnson Suspended Indefinitely, Allegedly Punched Woman

By

De'Andre Johnson is suspended indefinitely from the Florida State Seminoles football team allegedly for striking a woman in a bar.

Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher announced Johnson's suspension Thursday, the day after the backup quarterback was accused of punching a woman in the face, ESPN reported.

The alleged victim is a 21-year-old student at Florida State University and witnesses told EPSN Johnson confronted her when she cut in front him to order a drink. The backup QB then grabbed her and punched her when she raised her arms.

ESPN did not identify the victim of the alleged assault, though a Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) report - which redacted Johnson's name and that of the witnesses who described the event - named her. ESPN reported she declined an interview.

The TPD did not interview Johnson because he left the bar after the incident, but treated the victim before she declined further care.

Johnson was an incoming freshman for the Seminoles and had little chance of winning the starting QB position against Sean Maguire, a junior, and Everett Golson, a senior who transferred from Notre Dame.

The New York Times published an investigative report in Nov. 2014 on how police and prosecutors in Tallahassee typically handle potential criminal cases involving Florida State football players. The report found football players typically faced lighter punishment, if they were eve charged with anything.

ESPN's "Outside the Lines" (OTL) published a similar report earlier this month, only the scope included football players at the University of Florida, as well as Florida State. The most well documented case was Jameis Winston's, as the TPD failed to interview him on several occasions after a female student accused him of raping her.

Neither Fisher nor any official at FSU has confirmed why Johnson was suspended, deeming it only an unspecified violation of team rules.
