MacBook Air Retina Release Date: 2014 Highly Unlikely, Spring 2015 More Realistic

By

Anyone hoping to add a MacBook Air with Retina display to their Christmas list is all but certainly out of luck.

The computer was notably left out of Apple's second fall unveiling event and the company seems secure in their holiday season offerings. Apple may also not feel the need to rush the Retina MacBook Air onto the market since their current models are doing well enough on their own.

BGR reported earlier this month, citing Taiwanese website Industrial and Commercial Times, that Apple got a shipment of their processing chips earlier than anticipated. The report stated that the MacBook Air Retina would be on the market by the end of 2014. Even at the time of that report, it was "beyond unlikely" that the new laptop would actually be released in 2014, BGR noted.

Apple boasts that the current 11- and 13-inch models of its ultra-slim, ultra-fast MacBook Air can sustain battery lifespans of nine and 12 hours, respectively. To get that kind of performance with an ultra-crisp Retina display Apple will need a spectacular processor.

The chip in question is the "Broadwell" Core M, BGR reported, which is "energy efficient" and does not require a fan to cool down. With all the other necessary technology already at their disposal, it is the chip Apple is reportedly waiting on to launch the MacBook Air Retina.

Motley Fool noted that Apple will be the first to utilize these chips, placing the release of the new laptop in the spring of 2015.

While 2014 will go down as the year Apple unveiled its first-ever Watch device and the larger-than-ever iPhones, 2015 could be big in its own right. Apple is rumored to be developing a 12-inch "iPad Pro," which would be a two-in-one device focused on business performance.
